Welcome to Sugar Land!
About 20 mi (32 km) southwest of Houston, Texas lies Sugar Land, a city that developed during the 1800s and was named for the sweet stuff on which the community was built. Today, historic buildings from the sugar industry remain and the Imperial Sugar’s headquarters are located here but the processing and refining plants of yesteryear no longer form a part of its landscape.Instead, the suburb has become a family-oriented residential community with nearly 10 parks, waterways and small bodies of water, such as Oyster Creek Park and Cleveland Lake, which drain into the Brazos River. The Sugar Land Memorial Park provides over 400 acres (161 ha) of recreational space, including the Justin P. Brindley Mountain Bike Trail, while Cullinan Park harbors bird watching possibilities. Other leisure pursuits in the area include the option to swing a club at two golf courses, don a pair of skates at Sugar Land Ice Center or test one’s shooting prowess at an indoor laser tag facility. Shopping is also plentiful at the Sugar Land Town Square and the First Colony Mall. The former is an upscale outdoor complex with fountains, trees, open walkways and a hotel, while the latter is the largest shopping mall in the area, complete with chain brand names, department stores and a cinema.
